Manchester Gig Review

A review of last nights gig in Manchester

Lostprophets @ MEN Arena

Sarah Walters
20/ 4/2007

SHOPKEEPERS around Greater Manchester must be scratching their heads.

Confused customers will whisper of mass abduction conspiracies as they shop without fear of being pestered for ciggies or cider.

Why? Because 12,000 kids have abandoned their evening hang outs for a night at the MEN Arena watching pretty Welsh emo boys, Lostprophets.

It's the kind of pre-pubescent assemblage usually reserved for the front gates at Alton Towers. And yet so many people and such easy access to the bar... Well, I never.

Inside, the teens are crammed in to the rafters and they're already screaming before there's so much as a whiff of their heroes.

Unsurprisingly then, ear drums finally blister when the lights drop and the Lostprophets spectacular begins, albeit in silhouette on a stage cloaked in white sheets (marginally better than their old technique of playing the opening number with their backs to the crowd).

For a couple of minutes, the sheer thumping excitement of Heaven For the Weather, Hell For the Company and whirling light show keeps the faithful onside, but it's a long tune and the mystique of the cloaked stage starts to feel like it might actually be a technical hiccup.

There's relief, then, when the fears prove unfounded and the sheets fall, revealing seven pin-up pop-rockers in standard issue drainpipe jeans and skin tight t-shirts.

Frontman Ian Watkins quickly begins his leapathon, while his band mates specialise in striking rock postures on the strategically placed boxes and floor monitors (surely a fitting use of any piece of high tech equipment?).

Melody keeps a back seat as noisefest We Still Kill the Old Way gets the party started and old fave Burn Burn even encourages those in the scary balconies to jump up and down.

Can't Stop, Gotta Date With Hate gets a rare outing, and from here in it's singles virtually all the way: The Fake Sound of Progress, 4AM Forever (minus the sheen of production and much better for it) and Last Summer - kicked off with a ska-tinged version of New Order's Blue Monday - take us into the interval. A corking version of Rooftops, A Town Called Hypocrisy, Last Train Home and Shinobi Versus Dragon Ninja meet us on the other side.

It's the sort of setlist that gets fans salivating, but it feels like a closing chapter.

The new material aired tonight certainly supports suspicions that the pop angle to which they owe this level of success is being put to bed so Ian's "heavier, darker, more evil" side can come back out of the closet.

Fortunately, the kids (naturally) greet the news with more screams. Emo then: it's a bit like Marmite.

But lover and detractor alike would admit Lostprophets have bounded ahead of their scenesters in the live game. And that is, after all, where raw talent really shows.

OPERATION4AM NEEDS YOU...PART TWO!!

Operation4am Needs You Part Two!!

Well, the arena tour starts in THREE ~ yes THREE days!!! So to mark the occassion, we here at Operation4am decided that this would be another ideal oppurtunity to get you guys involved!!!

The following link is for a flyer for you to print off and write your name in the blank space in the middle. Then , what we'd like you to do is take a photo of yourself at the venue you're going to ~ on your own, with friends or if you're really lucky, with the band, but with the flyer!! Then send it into us and we'll make up a gallery of all your shots, showing you guys supporting operation4am AND Lostprophets. Even we're getting in on this one....watch this space for some dodgy shots from Wembley!!

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t156/op4am/bw_flyer.gif

However, we realise that not all of you are lucky enough to be going to see the guys this week, so print off the flyer anyway and take a pic of yourself with it anywhere you fancy. At home, school, work...even walking the dog...wherever!! A little bit like this..

....and we'll include it in the gallery too!

We now have an Operation4am group page where you can post your pics if you wish

http://www.buzznet.com/groups/operation4am/?clearupdates=1

or you can post them here  mailto:yourusername.lostprophets.teamop4am@buzznet.com

So..get printing, get snapping and join in the fun!!

OPERATION4AM NEEDS YOU

Ok then, this is when we ask all of you to help us out if you can. We are looking for some kind people who wouldnt mind handing some flyers out to people to about Operation4am, at the  UK tour dates.

Anyone can help us in doing this, but there are a few requirements needed. Anyone willing to do this, must have paper, printer and printer ink. Oh and a pair of scissors, or one of those nice gullotine things!!! Also enthusiam coupled with confidence, and maybe a slightstreak of madness wouldnt go amiss.

You may ask what you will gain out of this... well along with our undying appreciation and eternal love, you will hopefully have a feeling of achievement and a sense of satisfaction. Here at Operation4am, our main aim, is to get lostprophets news etc out to people, and to help promote them and get them the recognition we all feel they deserve. So by promoting us, you are helping to promote lostprophets! If you dont mind being named we will have somekind of roll of honour thing aswell!!

Anyway if any of you would like to help us out then leave a message on this journal, or send us a message, and we will contact you in a day or two with the details.

thanks again for everyone support in this

Team Op4amxx

Making It All Worthwhile

I was on here a little while ago, and was thinking about putting it to bed for the night, when I noticed that we'd had a new comment left on our page. I flicked on it, thinking it would be someone just thanking us for the add. Well, I really couldn't have been more wrong. Infact, what I found completely blew me away!!

If you look down in our comments..there's one from a group of guys who I think we all know!!

I'm still a little shocked, but all of us ...and that includes all of you guys that have become a part of all this....should all feel immensely proud of what we have achieved so far. So give yourselves a pat on the back, and be happy in the knowledge that the guys know that we're here supporting them every step of the way. Not just with 4:AM Forever, but for the future too, because this is just the beginning. It's taken us a while, but now we feel as though the word is really starting to reach people..and that wouldn't be possible without you all helping along the way! So, thanks all of you for your support..long may it continue.

love

all of us

P.S  And thank you guys for the message..it made my night! xx

Names and Ages

We've had quite a few people contact us and say that whilst they like the tracks, they're not actually familiar with who the band members are. So, to the very best of our knowledge...here we go!!

Drums: Ilan Rubin 18 (debate rages on if he is the full time drummer or just there until Ian gets sick of arguing with him)
Guitar: Mike Lewis 29
Guitar: Lee Gaze 31
Bass: Stu Richardson 34
Keys: Jamie Oliver 31 (he cant cook but the boy sure can paint)
Vox and sarcasm : Ian David Carslick Watkins 29 (and dont let him tell you no different boy has to deal)

Hope that helps those of you who have been asking !!
